Photography, to us, is a life changing art. Before photography, we use to take the world and people around us for granted. Photography has enabled us to see the beauty in this world and the joy that it brings. We are so grateful that God has given us both the oppurtunity, and more than anything, a talent and an artistic vision towards photography. We love every moment of it! Both of us started our professional careers completely unrelated to photography. Never in this life, would we have thought that we would bring more than 10 years of passion into this art and turn it into a blossoming profession. For that, we certainly are grateful.
Derek has more than 10 years experience in photography starting years ago in the 'film age'. Having a passion for science and nature led him to purchase his first camera to capture the true beauty in nature. The beautiful landscapes, wild animals, and flowers drove him to a deeper passion for nature and capturing that beauty. He began photographing children within the family and capturing the true essence of innocence. "Why capture staged images when life does not allow for retakes, capture life as it is and as it happens" he says. He shot some family weddings and developed a deeper passion for photography. during his college years, photography was put on hold while he persued a career in professional science. But, the drive and passion for photography would not subside. After several years he decided to move into the 'digital age'. His wife, LiQun, purchased him his first digital camera and the passion just exploded from there. Without the limits of film and the waiting for development, the passion grew. More experimentation and instant satisfaction (or disatisfaction) allowed the art to be fine tuned. "It was a giant leap in photography to move into the digital age, one I was glad we made". Now, shooting weddings with his wife captures a joy that words cannot express. "Photographers are supposed to be disconnected from the emotions of the day, but how can you? We are hired to capture emotion and the day we disconnect ourselves from the joy and emotion of weddings, is the day we pack up and find a new career".
Liqun made her entrance into photography all because she married Derek. She bought their very 1st digital camera ( Canon 20D ) for Derek as a Christmas present several years ago. From then on, she has been completely "hooked"! After several years training under Derek , she developed her own unique style and specializes in wedding and portraiture photography. "Liqun has a great passion that drives her creativity for shooting weddings and capturing images of children" says Derek. "Kids love her and are so natural around her it makes for such a relaxed environment when shooting". "She has such a natural talent, it is amazing. Give her a camera and let her go to work", he says. She has a passion that every photographer needs. "Without passion driving you in this area, you might as well give up". 1. What is your style and approach to photographing weddings?
Our style of wedding photography could be described as an artistic photojournalistic style. We will use our artistic and creative vision to frame the romance, emotion, drama and spirit of your day with an unobtrusive,unstaged and uninhibited approach and fashion. Every wedding is different,every couple is unique, we are extremely attentive to details and want to capture the special tender moments for you, just as it is without any alteration. We are there not only to capture the people, but also everything else of the day, the details no one may see. 2. How did you start to photograph weddings? Aren't you tired of weddings since you have been to so many?
We have done a lot of portraiture photography prior to deciding to take a further step and focus our work on wedding photography. The portrait photography provided us with a solid foundation for our photographic and lighting skills. One thing that comes to our realization is that we want something that is more challenging, full of excitement, and something we could unleash our photographic skills and knowledge in a creative and unlimited way. We love the process of photographing weddings: observation, waiting for the perfect moment,utilization of light and the creativity of the art, with combination of all these we can produce great photographs and we absolutely love it! There is no other words that can be used to describe our passion toward wedding photography other than we are proud to be wedding photographers. After photographing many weddings we still have that excitement the night before the wedding shoot while we prepare for the next day. That excitement has never gone, that is one sure sign we are still "in love" with wedding photography! In the overwhelming digital age, digital cameras have completely revolutionized our approach to photography in our society. People often ask:"why should I hire a photographer and invest so much money? I can do it by myself!" Consumer digital cameras are inexpensive,durable, easy to use and fast to print. Those are absolutely true, however there is a difference between taking photographs with a consumer point and shoot digital cameras and taking great artistic photographs, delivering professional and archiveable quality prints. As a matter of fact, paint brushes and canvas are inexpensive too and if you wanted a work of art, who would you hire? Why else? 4. Will Derek and LiQun both personally photograph my wedding?
All our packages come with standard two photographers and one assistant. Both Derek and LiQun will personally photography your wedding and oversee all aspects of photography relating to your wedding as well.
5. What kind of equipment do you shoot with and do you back up the photos?
We shoot with all Canon high-end digital cameras and glass (lenses) only. Derek and LiQun each shoot with two Canon cameras. All our equipments have backups in case of camera or lens malfunction (but, with the price these things cost, they better not malfunction!). We always back up the images on site, which means before we leave your wedding there are two copies of your images. When we get back to the studio, we will back it up once more to DVD media, for peace of mind and security. Once your images are released to you, our gallery provider,Pictage will also store a copy of the high resolution images from your wedding on their server for another layer of added protection! Those images are invaluable to you and us; therefore, we want to take extreme care with them.
6. How long does it take to do the formal portrait?
The time for formal portraits varies, if you have a lot of family members, the time certainly will be longer. We usually recommend the couple set aside at least an hour for family portraits which does't include the time of moving around from place to place. Since those are important shots for family members, the couple should set apart enough time for this.
7. I heard that a lot of brides and grooms meet prior to the ceremony for the photo shoot, is that true?
Not really, we would say half meet prior to the ceremony.We always tell the couple that this part is extremely important for their photography and this is where we are going to take a lot of beautiful, artistic, and unique images of you together.From our experience, couples who chose to shoot this aspect after the ceremony,there is never enough time, typically within one hour after the ceremony we have to shoot family shots and the couple alone before they have to hurry to the reception. There are certainly advantages to shoot before the ceremony: your makeup is fresh, you can get in the reception immediately after the ceremony without worrying about the photo session, and most of all we have enough time to take more artistic images for the couple, especially the couples who may want to purchase an album. Some may say they don't want to lose that feeling before the ceremony, we absolutely understand that. Here is usually how we do it, we will set up a place to let the couple meet for the 1st time the day of the wedding and that meeting will absolutely be romantic and the emotion to capture will be real! No matter what, your wedding is very special and you won't lose that excitement and emotion at the time of the ceremony. The bottom line is, either way is fine, but time prior to the ceremony usually gives us the most time to work with you for the most artistic bang for your buck!
8. Why do you shoot digital?
Why not? We shoot on all high-end digital equipment. We believe the digital world lends itself to new creative options never before allowed in photography. We can capture more images in a faster time than with film and have much more to work from and more for you to choose. Typical wedding shooters using film, maybe capture 400-600 images. Typical wedding shooters using digital, over 2000 images per wedding!
9. Will you do photo retouching and how much do you charge for that?
One of the reasons that make Travel in Time Photography stand out is the post processing process of your wedding photos. We post process almost every single image of your wedding from color correction, black and white conversion, special effects,retouching blemishes etc. Generally we do not charge additional fees for photo retouching, unless the clients requests additional retouching not covered under our general work flow or heavy and extensive retouching (example: selective color, a black and white image with only the bouquet in full color, etc.).
10. Will I personally be involved in my album design? How long does it take to get my album?
Unlike most of other studios which take over the designing aspect of wedding albums without clients'involvement, Travel in Time Photography would rather take time with you and provide high quality albums with your personal touch. It is your album and you absolutely will be involved in picking up the photos and designing of your album. We usually will have a pre-design consultation with you which will greatly help us understand your desired album look. The design time depends on the cooperation of the clients; it can usually takes from a week to a month. If you would like Travel in Time Photography to take over the designing part, we can certainly do that and we will only need your approval before we send the final design to our printer.The printing process can take up to about 8-10 weeks and during the holiday seasons, please allow more time for the wedding album design and delivery. We do our best to get them as fast as possible. However, we use the best print house in the country, best album software in the world, and print with the best Italian made albums on the planet.So, perfection does take time.
11. Who owns the rights of all my wedding photos?
Although all our wedding packages come with digital negatives, Travel in Time Photography owns all rights of the photos. We will issue the clients a print copyright form for you when we release the digital negatives to you, this form allows you print the photos with any size at any printing place. It is like buying an audio CD, you use the songs, but the artists (in this case, us) owns the songs.
12.What kind of products do you offer?
We offer a variety of products from regular prints, large canvas printing, greeting cards; DVD slides shows, proof albums, coffee table albums, flush mount albums and parents albums. If you can think of anything else, let us know!
13. Would you hold the day for me since I am still shopping around?
We cannot hold any day open for clients unless we receive a 50% down payment. This reason is simple, during the wedding season, especially June, July and August, we receive a lot of calls from brides who are interested in booking us, if we hold the same day for everyone, and someone misses out. So, we require a deposit to retain our photographic services. Travel in Time Photography only books one wedding per week to assure that we provide the best quality of service to our clients.
14.What is needed to retain your services?
50% of the payment is required for retaining the day for your wedding. The remaining 50% is due a month before your wedding. The 50% Deposit is a NON-REFUNDABLE fee to secure your date with us. We then mark that date off of our calender as 'unavailable'. We do so, so that we may focus all of our efforts and skill, on you and you ALONE. The fee keeps us from double booking. You are hiring us and by reserving us, we CANNOT be booked by anyone else. That is why the fee is non-refundable.
15. Do you provide consultation before the booking?
Yes! We can meet somewhere that is most convenient to you and public of course. We will bring our sample album with us to show you as well. Our work is online and you can view our digital portfolios anytime.
16.Do you provide wedding consultation before our wedding day?
Absolutely! The pre-wedding consultation provides us the important information of your big day so that we know the itinerary of the day and what to expect. You don't like surprises and neither do we!
17.I really don't like to go to the beach for an engagement session. Can I pick up my engagement session location?
It is your engagement session. What makes one engagement session unique from others, is you! Wherever you pick, we will go! But be sure to contact us at least one month ahead of time, we have a very busy schedule, especially during the wedding seasons. Depending on the distance to travel, travel fees may incur. Please contact us for current travel fees.
18.When should I contact you if I plan to hire you for my wedding?
Right now! But really,we think the best time is as soon as possible (the earlier the better). Especially if you plan on having your wedding during the months of June, July or August. If you know the style of Travel in Time Photography is definitely something you are looking for, we suggest that you put us on top of the list of your wedding as soon as possible. As a very busy bride who watched over every detail of planning my wedding from the pink aisle runner to the cubic zirconium encrusted flowers placed carefully in my flower girl’s hair, I had a lot on my mind. One thing however that I didn't have to worry about were my photographers. From our first meeting with Travel in Time Photography at our home, where my husband and I described what type of pictures we wanted we knew we had chosen the right photographers for our wedding. We found that both Vanessa and Derek paid extensive attention to detail capturing everything from the bundle of hydrangeas that decorated the aisle to the stunning shoes I had so painstakingly picked out to match my dress, every detail was captured. As I look though my wedding album I look at some of the images in amazement, ‘How did Vanessa and Derek manage to capture this intimate moment we shared when it seemed no one was looking?’ Every picture seems to bring back a unique memory, I sometimes wish I could relive my wedding day, and although there is no time machine that exists, I know when I look at my pictures it’s almost like traveling in time.
